So who are the Chicago Run runners?

Schoolchildren from all over the city of Chicago - representing all walks of life. Aspiring young athletes, who take fitness and fun in stride. Happy, healthy, and enthusiastic kids, who are learning the fun and value of staying fit through running.

A few fun facts on our runners:

  • Our numbers are growing. In our 2008 Pilot Program, 2,350 students ran - and this number doubled in the 2008-2009 school year. Chicago Run is currently operating in 30 schools serving a total of 6,000 Chicago Public School children in 24 different communities across the city.
Our Runners
  • 90% of our runners qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. Chicago Run touches the lives of children from underserved communities from every corner of the city.
  • Our diversity reflects that of our city. In our program, participants represent a wide spectrum of ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds:
    • 47 % African-American
    • 45 % Hispanic
    • 4 % Caucasian
    • 3 % Asian
    • 1 % Other

But one thing that our children have in common is enthusiasm. Through the program, they've developed a genuine camaraderie, sense of achievement, and love for running. Learn more about the runners' point of view in Show & Tell.
